HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A driver was rescued Friday morning after he lost control of his rig and flipped it over a bridge on Interstate 85 North near Hillsborough, landing alongside U.S. Highway 70 below.

One lane of the interstate and all lanes of U.S. 70 were closed for several hours while crews hauled away the semi, inspected the bridge and made repairs.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Marco Myrick, 38, was driving the truck, which did not have a trailer, when a car in front of him slowed down. Myrick also tried to slow down, but the truck's brakes locked, causing him to swerve to the left.

Troopers said the truck rolled over the guardrail and down an embankment while striking several sections of the bridge, troopers said. Transportation officials said chunks of concrete rail fell from the bridge onto U.S. 70.

Myrick, who was pinned in the cab, was extricated and taken to Duke University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He was charged with failing to maintain lane control.

Crews pulled the truck clear of the bridge at about 10 a.m. and began making repairs. A temporary guardrail was put in place, and all lanes reopened shortly before noon.
