RALEIGH, N.C. — Sen. Andrew Brock, R-Davie, will resign his seat Saturday to accept an appointment to the state's Board of Review.
Brock was given the new job in House Bill 256, an appointments bill, which was given final approval in the House late Wednesday. Section 2.70, the final appointment made by Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger, appoints Brock to a term on the board ending in 2021.

Sitting lawmakers, who are state employees, cannot also hold another full-time state job.

Legislators created the three-member Board of Review in the Division of Employment Security in 2011 to hear upper-level appeals regarding unemployment insurance. The board also has authority to decide cases on employer tax liability and employee classification.

Brock's new position will pay $124,563 under the 2017 budget, a substantial increase from the roughly $14,000 a year salary for state lawmakers. A 2016 report by the legislature's internal auditor, the Program Evaluation Division, found that the board's salaries are much higher than similar positions in other states.

Appointments bills do not require the governor's signature and are not eligible for a veto. They become law when passed by both chambers.

Brock, a political consultant, is in his eighth term in the Senate. He currently serves as a co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.
