CARRBORO, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a security breach at a driver's license office in the Carrboro Plaza Shopping Center, the state Division of Motor Vehicles said Thursday.

The breach might have involved the personal information of at least 13 customers of the license office, officials said. Personal information that might have been compromised includes names, addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth, driver's license numbers, Social Security numbers and medical information.

The DMV's License and Theft Bureau, the Carrboro Police Department and the Chapel Hill Police Department plan to notify people whose information might have been compromised as soon as possible, officials said.

Anyone who noticed unusual activity at the Carrboro driver's license office between July 1 and April 6 is asked to call the DMV License and Theft Bureau at 1-877-286-6981.

Compromised records will be flagged by DMV to protect records and prevent fraudulent online activity, officials said.
