Section of McCrimmon Parkway closing temporarily

— Contractors will temporarily close a section of McCrimmon Parkway in Cary on Monday to begin construction on two bridges over the Western Wake Freeway segment of the Triangle Expressway project in Wake and Durham counties.

McCrimmon Parkway will intersect with the Triangle Expressway approximately 1,000 feet west of the west entrance to Panther Creek High School.

The road closure will prevent access to Panther Creek High School from the west. Access will be maintained from the east via N.C. Highway 55 and McCrimmon Parkway, and both entrances to the high school will remain open.

McCrimmon Parkway will re-open when the overpasses are completed, which is expected to last no longer than 10 months, weather permitting.

The work is part of the Triangle Expressway project, a new roadway from the N.C. 55 Bypass near Holly Springs to Interstate 40 at N.C. 147 in Wake and Durham counties. The toll road system will be 18.8 miles in length and comprised of three segments: Western Wake Freeway, Triangle Parkway and existing N.C. 540 between N.C. 55 and N.C. 54.

The project is expected to save customers as much as 20 minutes per full trip. The Expressway will utilize an all-electronic toll collection system, meaning there will be no tollbooths and no stopping to pay tolls.

The Triangle Parkway segment is scheduled to open to traffic 2011 while the Western Wake Freeway segment is scheduled to open to traffic in 2012.

    When they built I-540 through North Raleigh, they were able to keep Leesville, Creedmoor, Six Forks, Falls of Neuse, Litchford, Gresham Lake, and Capital open as they built the bridges.

    Guess since it's a toll road, the rules are different.

    I wonder how they'll enhance other thoroughfares to make up for McCrimmon?

    I don't understand why the whole road needs to be closed for a whole ten months. They put the overpasses for 540 over 40 without closing the road at all during the day time. I suppose one answer is that the inconvenience of closing the road does not justify the extra expense of night time work.
