— A section of Hillsborough Street will be closed to traffic through Jan. 5 to allow crews to install new sewer lines for a student apartment and retail project under construction near the North Carolina State University campus, officials said Thursday.

The street will be closed between Brooks Avenue and Concord Street. A signed detour in place will have drivers using Brooks Avenue, Wade Avenue and Faircloth Street.

To access businesses in the work zone, people can use Shepherd Street and Daisy Street on the north side of Hillsborough Street.

Construction of the five-story Stanhope Center apartment and retail building is expected to be finished in the summer of 2015.

The sewer line work was scheduled while N.C. State is on its winter break to lessen the impact on local traffic, officials said.

Last night was a mess on Brooks at Wade. Cars backed up for several blocks on Brooks from the traffic light at Wade, cars at the end of the waiting line pulled out into the opposing lane of traffic to make a left turn onto a side street in order to get to Dixie Trail, CAT busses couldn't make the right turn onto Brooks from Wade because of cars stopped in the left lane of Brooks that were waiting to make the left onto Wade. Thank you Raleigh City public works for making a dangerous condition that already exists on Brooks Ave worse. Just waiting for a serious collision to occur when cars speeding towards Wade Ave come up unexpectedly on the stopped cars or have a head on with cars accelerating after turning on Brooks around a curve meet one of those that got into their lane to get on a side street or when someone on that side street attempts to cross Brooks.

When approaching Raleigh from the west on Hillsborough Street there was a detour debacle. The detour signs were directing drivers to the new apartment block (south not north) which is not a detour. Car after car after car made to turn into a construction zone and make a u-turn back out. I always wonder how that happens....

I really like the upgraded streetscape down toward the Bell Tower, with the orange brick and medians. It'll be nice to see that upgrade carried out further west. I just hope they can accomplish it faster than last time, because the construction phase is really rough on the businesses along there.

I'd also love to see some equally fast action on some of the other projects that have been promised us for approving the latest bond. There is always a lot of talk about projects in the pipeline, but actual progress moves at glacial speed - unless of course someone with INFLUENCE whispers in the right ears...

"There is a giant sign with orange that says ROAD CLOSED DETOUR on big barricades and other people are still trying to maneuver around it. Only to have to come back 2 minutes because they realize the road is closed."

We need that guy from a few years ago to build some more of those barrel monsters.

If this is where the construction is then they need to REMOVE the baracade at Hillsborough and Gorman!!! Businesses are still open in that area!!!

I work in a building facing Brooks and Hillsborough and watched dozens of drivers almost smash right into the barricade signs- slamming on brakes and weaving around it. So many not paying attention!
