Second suspect charged in trucker assault

A second suspect has been arrested in the assault and robbery of a long-haul trucker last month near Wade.

WADE, N.C. — A second suspect has been arrested in the assault and robbery of a long-haul trucker last month near Wade.

Cumberland County sheriff’s detectives have charged Leroy Douglas, 37, of 7140 Laurinburg Road in Raeford, with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.

He was held in the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.

The trucker, Wael Wael, of Jacksonville, Fla., was found May 2 in the median of Goldsboro Road and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He remains hospitalized with severe head trauma.

Detectives on Tuesday arrested Lutina Oxendine, a woman known to frequent truck stops, in connection with the case. She was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with an armed weapon, robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to inflict serious injury.

Oxendine was held under a $100,000 secured bond.
