— A second child in North Carolina has died from the flu this season, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

The state said Thursday that the child was between 5 and 17 years old. The child’s gender and hometown were not released.

The first flu-related death of the 2014-15 season was reported in the first week of October, when an elementary child from the Triangle died from the virus.

Flu shots are encouraged, especially for populations most at-risk from serious illness, including young children, the elderly or those with chronic health conditions.

The flu season runs from October to May. Last season, 107 people in the state died from influenza.

Visit the state's website for more information, including where to obtain a flu vaccine.

I hope you never have to see for yourself that it is not a scare tactic. Some have seen it and it is very very sad.

    GLARG -
There are treatments and it doesnt result in death in 50% within one week of showing symptoms.

So not the same thing at all."

Umm... treatments, huh? Can you tell me what treatment is used? And, Ebola does not kill 50% within one week.

What's your point? That the vaccine is not a 100% protection against flu? It never can be but it does help.

Wish it would also be reported if these children were also 'at risk' with other very extenuating illnesses that made catching the flu very dangerous. Do not think very many people die from the flu if they were healthy when they contacted it. Seems like a scare tactic to me - yes, I do take it seriously, but please give 'all' facts!

    Ah, no.

Ebola doesnt have as high a body count because it isnt here in comparable numbers.

Even a large modern hospital is going to be able to care for at most 10 or so cases. If we ever had hundreds of cases going on at a time we couldnt be able to do effective containment and the death rate would quickly surpass flu.

The death rate from flu is 0.06%. Ebola is 50-70%. And Ebola kills within a week to 10 days. IF you dont see the difference you are being obtuse.

Kills tens of thousands of Americans every years, is communicable by air, has caused worldwide pandemics in the past that killed millions. You're 100% right. Flu and Ebola aren't the same thing at all. Flu is far more dangerous to Americans than Ebola is or ever will be.
