Second man charged in fatal Sanford stabbing

Police on Sunday charged a second man in a fatal stabbing at the Prince Downtown Motel in Sanford last week.

SANFORD, N.C. — Police on Sunday charged a second man in a fatal stabbing at the Prince Downtown Motel in Sanford last week.

John Mark Legg III, 29, of 410 Carthage St. in Sanford, was charged with murder in the Sept. 24 death of Paul David Johnson.

Johnson, 20, was stabbed in the back during an altercation at the motel, which is near the intersection of Carthage and Gulf streets, police said.

Legg was injured in the altercation and had been treated at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill. Police arrested him upon his release from the hospital.

Lee Aaron Matthews, 31, of Room 104 in the Prince Downtown Motel, was charged a week ago with murder in the case.

Both men are being held without bond in the Lee County jail.
