DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police on Wednesday arrested a man in connection with a January 2011 slaying of a man who was found shot to death on Canal Street.

Ricky Lamar Rhodes, 21, of Durham, is charged with conspiracy to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was also served with unrelated warrants charging him with conspiracy to traffic heroin and possession of heroin with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver.

Rhodes was brought to Durham from West Virginia, where he was serving time in a federal prison on drug and weapons charges.

Jimmie Lamont Harris Jr., 24, of Dowd Street was found shot to death in the 500 block of Canal Street shortly before 5 p.m. on January 16, 2011. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim – a 28-year-old male – was also shot and suffered serious injuries.

Rhodes is the second person charged in the case. In March, Veshan M. Chambers, 24, was indicted on charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Police said the crime was not random.
