Seasonal spraygrounds, pools begin to open

This weekend's mid-70s temperatures and kind of stormy forecast don't exactly make for great outdoor swimming weather. But the region's seasonal pools and spraygrounds are beginning to open.

In Durham, all of the spraygrounds except the one at Hillside Pool open Friday. (The Hillside sprayground will open on June 13 when the rest of the city's outdoor pools open).

The Spray Pad in Fayetteville opens Saturday. In Raleigh, Millbrook Exchange Park's wading pool and sprayground open on Monday. So do the wading pool pool and diving well at Optimist Park, also in Raleigh.

I've updated our seasonal public pool database with all of the dates. Everything will be open by mid-June.

One note: This database only includes pools where the public can drop in to swim on a random day when it's open. Some pools on the list do have memberships, but they also sell one-day passes.

And, in an attempt to head off a question that I seem to always get when I launch this database each year: Yes, southwestern Wake County has no public outdoor pools. Morrisville offers a year-round aquatic complex. Cary has the Triangle Aquatics Center, also a big year-round center. Other than that, no other town in that part of the county owns a public pool.
