RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man who was found dead in a ditch near Falls Lake five months ago died of multiple stab wounds to his head, neck, chest and back, according to an autopsy report released Monday.

Joanna Roberta Madonna, a former Wake County school teacher, is accused of killing her husband, Jose Manuel Perez, 64, who was found June 16, a day after he was last seen with his wife, Joanna Roberta Madonna, at their home on Schoolhouse Street, according to authorities.

According to warrants in the case, Madonna told investigators that Perez was out of town on June 15 and that she thought he had been drinking when she talked to him that night on the phone.

But her children told sheriff's deputies that she left home with Perez and returned later that evening without him. She was hot and sweaty and had a knife wound on her arm.

Perez's personal belongings, including his mail, bank cards, eyeglasses and medication, were found in a trash bag at the home, as well as clothing and other items "used during the events leading up to Perez's death."

Authorities haven't commented on a motive for the crime, but in search warrants, investigators say Madonna might have thought that her husband was having an affair.

Madonna is in the Wake County Detention Center, where she is being held without bond until her case goes to trial. A date for that, however, has not been set.
