Search on for parents of infant found abandoned at McDonald's

Posted November 13, 2008

— The search continued Thursday for the parents of a infant found abandoned at a McDonald's restaurant in southwest Charlotte.

The baby boy was found in the women's restroom Wednesday morning at the McDonald’s on Rivergate Parkway. He was breathing and didn't appear to be injured.

Police said they believe the infant was about two or three hours old when he was found with his umbilical cord still attached.

Police said a man was seen taking the baby into the women's restroom before running out the door. Officers released a photo Thursday of the unidentified man taken from surveillance video.

If the parents are not found, the baby will be placed in foster care and put up for adoption.

“Of course we will treat him fairly, and again we just want to make sure the mother is safe and then find out the reason why what occurred yesterday –  and again, each situation has to be evaluated independently,” said Michael Davis, with the Charlotte Police Department.

The baby was taken Wednesday to Carolinas Medical Center for observation.

McDonalds bathrooms are certainly not the smartest place to leave your unwanted baby, but at least it wasn't the dumpster!

I hope the Mom is o.k. Glad the baby is safe now

I thought NC had a safe haven program in place...where parents could surrender the child at a fire house or hospital. That would have been better...but let's keep in mind that the parents at least did not intentionally harm the baby...they left the baby somewhere where it was believed that the baby would have been found fairly quickly. The parents sound desparate, I hope that mom is okay, and thankful that the baby is safe and unharmed.

Which system did the child go to. I would love to help this small innocent life. Babies are perfect and precious. I pray God continues to put a watchful hand on this little one.

"If the parents are not found, the baby will be placed in foster care and put up for adoption."

This statement alone is proof positive that our system SUCKS

My concern is where is the mom? She of course could be no better than the man who left the child. However, obviously unless they just happened to have a carseat laying around, someone had planned for the birth of this child, she obviously did not give birth in a hospital - the placenta still attached tells you that whom ever delivered this child has no medical training. Did the mom have problems possibly with delivery that could have endangered her life or heaven forbid worse. Hopefully they find the mom and for the future of this child make all the right decisions.

I say leave well enough alone and put the baby with a family that would love it. I just hope these people quit reproducing.

"If the parents are not found, the baby will be placed in foster care and put up for adoption."

Okay, so if the parents ARE found, what will they do? Give the kid back to the parents?

I fear that if they find these "parents", they might actually get custody back of the child. I say, if you decide to dump your baby at a Mickey D's, so be it, but DON'T ask for the child back.
I hope he finds happiness with a new family. And I hope the mom is ok.
