PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County officials announced Friday that the water-focused search for a man who went missing Wednesday at Sugar Lake has been suspended. On Sunday, reports were circulating that the man's family is offering an award for the person who finds him.

Gabriel Boone Cummins, 18, of Pittsboro, was last seen near 300 Sugar Lake Road between 1 and 2 a.m. on July 19. Authorities utilized bloodhounds, boats, rescue divers, and sonar among tools to look for the missing teen. Water depths in some areas of the lake are over 100 feet.

"I've had many calls and want to keep everyone in the loop; however, I do not have any new information regarding the disappearance of Gabriel," said Sara Pack, Administrative Lieutenant with the Chatham County Sheriff's Office. "I have spoken with investigators and the family has indeed mentioned the possibility of offering a reward. However, investigators could not advise an amount or confirm the validity of the flyers I saw circulating online."

Boone was last seen near Sugar Lake in Pittsboro, but officials' search of the lake and surrounding areas yielded no sign of him.

“This does not mean we are giving up on Boone or discontinuing the search,” says Sheriff Mike Roberson. “We are simply shifting our focus away from the lake as we continue to gather information and form new leads. We are doing everything in our power to find Boone and hope to see him return safely to his family.”

Cummins' family says they remain hopeful. His father, John Cummins made a desperate plea Friday afternoon for his safe return.

"We love you we just want you to come home safe," said John Cummins. "You're in absolutely no trouble. Everybody here is just trying to make sure you're safe and get home to us."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at 919-542-2911.
