Scooter driver dies in Durham collision

A scooter driver died Wednesday afternoon in a collision with a car on University Drive in Durham.

DURHAM, N.C. — A scooter driver died Wednesday afternoon in a collision with a car on University Drive in Durham. 

Police said James Byrd, of Alpine Road in Durham, turned left onto U.S. Highway 15/501 (Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard) and into the path of Joshua Johnson, who was on the scooter.

Johnson, 33, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Byrd was not injured.

Byrd was charged with failure to yield right of way and misdemeanor death by vehicle.
