School contracts commercial line amid bus driver shortage

Posted September 6

— Facing a historic shortage of bus drivers, Maine students attending a private school are being ferried to school in commercial bus lines.

Dozens of students attending Berwick Academy in South Berwick were picked up by deluxe C&J commercial buses in recent weeks. WCSH-TV reports ( ) the school had to contract the commercial line because there aren't enough regular bus drivers to go around.

According to the state Department of Education Transportation, Maine is down to 50 public school bus drivers. Brian Tafton, who runs a bus depot in York, says the job openings are slow to fill because they want safe, reliable people behind the wheel.
