School bus involved in Raleigh wreck

Posted May 19, 2008

— A school bus was involved in an accident at New Bern Avenue/U.S. Highway 64 and Freedom Drive on Monday afternoon.

Twenty students from Enloe High School and Ligon Middle School were on board at the time, but none were injured, said Bill Poston, a spokesman for the Wake County Public School System. The bus driver was also OK.

The bus driver was pulling away from River Oaks Middle School after picking up a few students, Poston said. As the bus pulled onto Freedom Drive, a vehicle struck its front end.

Officials did not know if the driver of the second vehicle had been injured.

Poston said he thought the second vehicle was a wrecker.

Sky5 footage of the scene showed the hood of the bus was ripped off and its engine exposed. At least one car was being towed away.

Well there may always be a reduced speed limit in school zones, but this particular locations does not have any school zone or reduced speed signage. The posted speed limit is 45 mph. The sign for that is located in the right-of-way in front of the school.

"The area does NOT have a lower speed limit during school hours unless I'm just missing the signs. The speed limit is 45 mph in that area."

There is always a reduced speed limit in school zones. The actual speed sometimes depends on the posted speed limit in that area.

My daughter was on the bus that got hit. She says from what she had seen the rest of the traffic on New Bern was stopped for a red light but the wrecker ran right through it. He had to be going pretty fast because he took the whole front of the bus off and it was quite a ways further down from the intersection before he was able to come to a stop.
If the bus had been any further out onto New Bern there would have been a lot of kids hurt!

...I wonder if it is the same wrecker from Dean's that pulled out in front of me in that area ?.....

WOW! Did I hit a nerve or what!...LOL

You have to admit that wreckers and police look out for each other because they work so close together. I made the statement because I have had a wrecker fly by me doing over 65 in a 55, with a car already on back, and a police car passed him going faster. Lights were not on so I followed this policeman at a distance and he drove into a resturant where there were many other police cars. Now, why did he not stop the wrecker and why was he driving at least 15 MPH over the speed limit to get to a resturant?

My statement was pure personal feelings and I admit that. Can you tell me why policeman and wreckers can drive faster than the posted speed limit when there is no emergency?

Well there is a light at the intersection of New Bern Ave and Freedom Drive, however a hotel sits between the school and Freedom Drive. If the bus driver pulled out in front of any vehicle, the BUS DRIVER would be at fault. The area does NOT have a lower speed limit during school hours unless I'm just missing the signs. The speed limit is 45 mph in that area.

I have seen regular people drive faster than they should...why are tow truck drivers any different? Making a general statement that tow truck drivers and police officers are "good friends" implying that the officer would let the driver off the hook if it was his/her fault is just plain crazy.

You were able to gather a lot of information from that story weren't you? And what makes you think that we are good friends with the wrecker drivers?

I wonder if you know anything you ever talk about or just talk blindly?

There IS a traffic signal there, BUT you are right.. the traffic on 64/New Bern Avenue is terrible and sometimes they're going way too fast to stop for this light. I know....I drove for this school this year for a few months. The traffic signal actually has a LEAD GREEN for left turns onto New Bern Avenue. From the video, the bus seems to be coming OFF Freedom Dr. and ONTO or ACROSS New Bern Avenue. The reporters might want to check that out.

What controls the traffic at that intersection? From the video, it does not look like there is a traffic signal. As far as the wrecker traveled after the impact, I would say the wrecker was going faster than the posted 35 MPH during school hours.

Luckily, he did not hit the bus 1-2 sec's later or kids would have been impacted. I have seen wreckers drive faster than they should. It's almost they are in a hurry to get rid of the car they are towing so they can get back out there.

I wonder if any tickets or fines will be given out to the wrecker driver? I mean, they are good friends with the police!
