SBI investigates death at Rocky Mount hospital

Posted August 6, 2009

— State investigators are looking into a death last month at a Rocky Mount hospital, officials said.

A staff member of Coastal Plain Hospital found James R. Collins, 23, dead in a hospital isolation room on July 23. He had been dead about six hours before he was found, police said.

The cause of death hasn't been determined.

State Bureau of Investigation agents with the Medicaid Investigations Unit in the state Attorney General's Office are looking into Collins' death, officials said.

Coastal Plain Hospital offers mental health services and treatment for drug and alcohol dependency.

I've been a psych nurse for 25 years. It's not unusual where I work for patients to request to sleep in the isolation room. A lot of them, especially the very paranoid patients, feel safer there. The door is left unlocked, and we check on them regularly, either every 30 or 15 minutes as determined by their psychiatrist, just like we would if they were sleeping in their assigned bedroom. Sorry for this patient and family.

I think you are supposed to check on those folks way sooner than 6 hours, or at least that's I learned in nursing school
