SANFORD, N.C. — A Tuesday night shooting in Sanford left a 15-year-old dead, police said Wednesday.

Officers responded to a reported shooting at 619 Magnolia St. at about 8 p.m. but found that bystanders had already taken the shooting victim to Central Carolina Hospital, police said.

The teen died at the hospital of a gunshot wound to the head, police said.

Police haven't identified the victim, but SanLee Middle School officials released a statement identifying him as Larod McKoy.

McKoy finished the eighth grade at SanLee Middle last month and was to enroll at Lee County High School this fall, officials said.

"Every time you saw Larod, he had a smile on his face. Larod was a friend to all and was a positive role model for others," SanLee Principal Kenna Wilson said in the statement. "My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his family and his friends. He was an incredible young man with a bright future."

Police haven't released any information about a motive for the shooting or possible suspects.
