Sanford man pleads guilty to killing romantic rival

Posted May 26, 2010

— A Sanford man has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for killing his former girlfriend's new boyfriend two years ago, authorities said.

Tereso DeJesus Benitez Alvarez, 37, of 227 Temple Ave., pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder in the June 21, 2008, death of Rodolfo Nolqsco Chavez, 29, of Sanford.

Police said Alvarez and his cousin broke into his former girlfriend's home, and Alvarez stabbed Chavez in the chest numerous times.

A murder charge was dismissed against Alvarez's cousin, Jose Alvarez, because prosecutors said they didn't have enough evidence to link him to Chavez's death.

Tereso Alvarez was sentenced to between 94 and 122 months in prison.

Second degree murder? Seven years in prison? If this was a plea deal, the prosecutor needs to be reemed out. This was first degree murder if there ever was one. The guy broke into the house the victim was in to kill him. That is premeditation. He deserves life with no parole.
