Sanford, N.C. — Sanford police were searching for clues Friday after a 68-year-old man was killed in a shooting at a home south of downtown.
Authorities say Gary Howard died early Thursday at Central Carolina Hospital after he was shot while at a home on Boykin Avenue
Sergeant Vincent Frazer says about 20 people were inside the home at the time of the shooting, there for a party to play cards.
Someone outside the home began shooting through the front door at about 1 a.m. Thursday, striking Howard in the chest.
Frazer said it's unclear whether Howard, who lived near the Boykin Avenue home, was targeted in the incident.
The suspect ran from the scene following the shooting. Authorities have not released a description of a possible suspect, but their investigation is ongoing.
