Sampson County teen killed in tractor-trailer wreck

Posted September 11, 2013

— A Sampson County teen was killed early Wednesday when he lost control of his car on a curve and struck a tractor-trailer on N.C. Highway 411 near Roseboro.

Jalen Mathis, of Ivanhoe, was thrown from the Ford Focus he was driving and pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say speed was a factor in the wreck.

After Mathis' car hit the truck, which was stopped at a stop sign preparing to cross N.C. 411, the tractor-trailer collided with a third vehicle, which was also crossing N.C. 411 in the opposite direction.

The drivers of the tractor-trailer and the third vehicle were not seriously hurt.

No charges are expected.

My sister was killed 44 years ago by a tractor-trailer; along with 3 other young men. My heart goes out to this family in their loss. Hold on to God's unchanging hands, and He will see all of you through this difficult time. Keep his memories for they are precious.

"Troopers say speed was a factor in the wreck." Also, "was thrown from the Ford Focus he was driving" may indicate he wasn't wearing a seat belt.

Moved a stopped tractor-trailer with a 2,500 pound Focus? Wow.
