— A former Sampson County teacher is facing child pornography charges.

The State Bureau of Investigation’s Computer Crimes Unit arrested Paul Stephen Pearsall, 31, of the 11000 block of Ludhorne Drive in Roseboro, Thursday and charged him with three counts of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor for possession of child porn.

Pearsall resigned Thursday from his job as an eighth-grade science teacher at Hobbton Middle School in Newton Grove, Sampson County Schools spokeswoman Susan Warren said. He had been employed there since February 2008.

Pearsall was being held under a $25,000 bond in the Cumberland County Detention Center on Tuesday.

We all know that the law says "innocent until proven guilty" but the general population says "guilty until proven innocent". Most people won't admit it but as soon as most of us read this story we automatically assume he is as guilty as sin especially being that he is supposed to be a role model for our kids.

This story brings a bad feeling with it, guilty or not.

Hunter38, I think that when teachers, ministers, politicians or other people who are often trusted by the public are charged with crimes like this, it makes the news more, but that does not mean that people in those roles necessarily are charged and/or found guilty more often than people in other fields.

EWCheerCoach, thank you for the reminder that being charged is not the same as being guilty. I remember that with other crimes, but as a teacher who's dedicated to making sure that kids are not hurt, I am infuriated when I see headlines like this and sometimes forget.

@sammyg What part of "Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" do you not understand?

ewcheercoach - you are absolutely right that it is easy to set someone up for this charge. But if he was actively participating in sharing/viewing, he should go to jail for a long time. Maybe reduce his sentence a bit if he can cough up the names of the producers and get them convicted.

Y'all remember Ron Barringer, a middle school principal who was charged with child pornography and resigned from his job and was partically crucified on this website?

Yeah, he was found NOT GUILTY later on. Not saying that that is always going to be the case, but being charged and being convicted are 2 very different things. In Mr. Barringer's case, someone else had sent him the stuff and he had not opened it or looked at it. Just sayin.

I see we have our child porn lovers responding again! Lock him up and take away the internet!

Probably because it's more shocking when someone who is in a position of trust abuses authority. Read stats on "clergymen" who have been charged with kiddy porn and less than 5% are Catholic. Yet, the ones you always hear about are Catholic priests. They get the (bad) press. I always wondered about people who look at that sort of thing. I like to watch movies like "Arnold Kills Everyone", but it doesn't mean I like to murder people. Do people who look at kiddy porn like to molest kids? Although I do admit that Dexter has a certain charm.
