FAISON, N.C. — Sampson County deputies were investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition Wednesday night.

Deputies withheld the man’s name.

At 9:10 p.m., the Sampson County E-911 Center received a report of a shooting victim on Six Runs Lane, across from Hargrove Elementary School on N.C. Highway 403, dispatcher said.

Deputies found a man wounded in the head and lying in a pool of blood, they said.

Suttontown emergency crews took the man to Sampson Regional Medical Center, where he was airlifted to UNC Hospitals.

A preliminary investigation revealed that an unknown car had parked in the parking lot at Hargrove Elementary School and two men got out and walked across N.C. 403 toward Six Runs Lane.

A short time later, people heard gunshots and saw the two men run back toward the car at the school, authorities said.

The only description of the two men from the car was that they were black. Deputies said they do not know the motive for the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sampson County Sheriff's Office at 910-592-4141.
