Sampson cannery to close, lay off 300

Posted December 27, 2013

— The owners of a vegetable cannery in Sampson County have notified state officials that the plant will close in February, putting 300 employees out of work.

Allens Inc. filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, notice with the state Department of Commerce on Dec. 18, stating that it plans to close its plant in Turkey by Feb. 15.

Arkansas-based Allens filed for bankruptcy protection in October. Seneca Foods Corp. has a contract to buy the company's canning operations for $148 million, but the deal would have to be approved by the bankruptcy court.

Allens sells canned vegetable products under several brand names and private labels, including Veg-All, Popeye Spinach and Allens.
