Salemburg, N.C. — Sampson County authorities said Tuesday that they are investigating whether the body of a man found in ditch near Salemburg Tuesday afternoon and a nearby residential burglary earlier in the day are connected.
Deputies responding to a 911 call found the body of Joseph Fitzgerald Williams, 49, in a ditch in the 200 block of Lakewood School Road shortly before 3 p.m.
The cause of death hasn't been determined.
Investigators are looking into whether Williams is connected to a burglary that occurred at about 1 a.m. Tuesday at 186 Lakewood School Road. The homeowners told authorities that they were awakened by a loud crash to find an intruder in their living room, and one person in the home fired a gun at the intruder, who fled on foot.
