Sales tax increase finally wins Harnett approval

Lillington, N.C. — The fifth time was a charm Tuesday, as Harnett County voters finally approved a proposal to raise the local sales tax rate to help pay for school construction.
The referendum, which called for a quarter-cent sales tax increase, passed by a 71-29 percent margin, according to unofficial results.
Voters defeated similar proposals four previous times since 2007.
Supporters say the money is needed to help Harnett County Schools keep up with enrollment growth, especially in the western part of the county. The area near Fort Bragg is in the middle of a population boom as the Army brings in thousands of families.
