Sales tax increase finally wins Harnett approval

Posted November 5, 2013

— The fifth time was a charm Tuesday, as Harnett County voters finally approved a proposal to raise the local sales tax rate to help pay for school construction.

The referendum, which called for a quarter-cent sales tax increase, passed by a 71-29 percent margin, according to unofficial results.

Voters defeated similar proposals four previous times since 2007.

Supporters say the money is needed to help Harnett County Schools keep up with enrollment growth, especially in the western part of the county. The area near Fort Bragg is in the middle of a population boom as the Army brings in thousands of families.

Many I talked to voted for it, for the same reason, "they'll raise our property taxes if it don't pass". Sad to say, they'll most likely still raise our property taxes anyway.

About 4,400 Harnett County citizens voted in this OFF election cycle. What percentage is that of the registered voters in Harnett County? In the 2012 election, 39,346 voted on this same issue with 65.41% (or 25,631) voting against it. This is really sickening. These "tax and spenders" can't take "no" for an answer and keep putting it on the ballot HOPING for a chance to get approval on an OFF election cycle with very little voter participation. This is why you have to be vigilant against the government at ALL times. Now, what the citizens of Harnett County ought to do is have this issue put BACK onto the ballot for the 2014 election cycle and then put in an Ordinance that all such referendums must be on Presidential Election cycles to insure TRUE voter turnout. This question was asked and answered FOUR previous times. I'm at a loss as to WHY that isn't the story, WRAT? And as far as not "squandering" it....we are talking about gov'ment here, aren't we?!

Let just hope that they don't squander the money and spend wisely. Cut down on the size and waste in the administration and start providing for the teachers. There are several in administration that need to get over their over inflated self worth. The school board also needs to be taken to task for allow the abuse of tax dollars.
