Bacon over time

It's official. You can now track the price of bacon on wral.com. This is a special moment for me - not only because I've been working on this piece for awhile but mainly because bacon is my favorite food group. You can also track 14 other grocery items from local Raleigh stores, and see which stores give you the best prices. It's quite interesting if I do say so myself. Check it out - be sure to click "Show Trends" then select "Bacon" from the drop down menu at the top to see the beautiful chart of bacon over time. It doesn't get much better than this unless of course you're looking at the chart while eating a piece of the hickory smoked, thick sliced pork product.

A Day in the Newsroom

Here is the latest of my multimedia creations - I shot this time lapse video using a still camera. I went around the newsroom at various times of day, set up the tripod and let the camera capture images about every 5 seconds for about an hour at a time. The resulting images were then stitched into individual clips then edited together with a sound track. It is intended to show the buzzing activity of the WRAL newsroom on a typical day.

I've been experimenting with Virtual Reality imaging (VR) - which allows a 360 degree horizontal and 180 degree vertical view of a scene. Basically, you can view any angle from one perspective. It involves taking multiple shots around, then up and down, then using software to stitch them together. It's a bit of trial and error and can be pretty frustrating, but it's pretty cool when finished! I did the first one of the WRAL-TV newsroom, and I plan to do others at places where I shoot my assignments.

It's that time of year when your face hurts from all the laughing and smiling - which means lots of photos. If you're lucky, the person behind the camera has an idea of how to take a photo, but we've all been stuck with a quickly fading perma-grin, waiting for uncle Joe to fumble around until he figures out the camera. Here are a few pointers to pass along to uncle Joe - and some you may like yourself!

With abundant wildlife, spectacular scenery and a rich native culture, a trip to Alaska proved well worth the distance and expense. My wife and I visited family in Anchorage and relied heavily on their knowledge and expertise, which proved invaluable.

I have been working on a new project for wral.com that focuses on the beauty of our wonderful state of North Carolina. Both natural beauty as well as cultural beauty are the main themes. We'll be showing you pieces along the way (most likely linked up on Bill Leslie's Carolina Conversations blog) but then will make it a stand-alone interactive map guiding you all over the state with photos and audio.

Help Me Pimp My Ride!

My timing belt blew out on my Subaru Legacy Wagon (1990 w/ 150k). It had never been changed since I bought it at 90k miles, I consider myself very lucky it lasted this long! We're going to fix it for now, but my wife and I are already planning to get something else.
