I Know Your Secret

Richard Adkins

There is some sort of irony in shooting a story about the dangers of blogging and then writing about that story in your blog. I love irony.

This week we aired a two and a half minute piece detailing some of the dangers of blogging. Not so much this type of blog, but rather what many teenagers and adults are writing (and posting pictures) on the web. We found party invitations, inappropriate pictures, references to drug use and underage drinking. No, none of that is shocking. I know it goes on. But it’s one thing to do it, it’s another thing to tell the whole world you’re doing that stuff.
Beyond the concern that stalkers, sexual predators and former lovers can track you down through your web blogs, think about what potential employers, future neighbors and your not-yet-found soul mate may find out about you! Do really want to walk into that job interview and be confronted with a picture of the Keg Stand you did at the party? Do you want you fiancé’s dad finding that well-written piece you posted about Thursday night “with the girls”? Or do you want your kids to find in the web archives where those Mardi Gras beads really came from?

Yes, blogging is fun, and there’s nothing like having a soapbox from which to deliver your message (even if no one is listening). But be careful, you never know when your blog might end up in my story.
