Roughly 100,330 Gwinnett customers without power, 1.4 million statewide

Posted September 11

— About 100,330 people were without power in Gwinnett County Monday evening.

As of about 6 p.m., Jackson EMC reported 27,998 customers without power. Georgia Power said 45,000 of their Gwinnett customers were without power.

Walton EMC reported another 27,332 customers without power.

According to reports, statewide, more than 1.4 million people are without power across Georgia.

"Strong winds causing trees to fall into power lines is the main cause of outages," according to a Jackson EMC press release.

Jackson EMC reported 1,747 individual outages affecting about 66,717 members across their 10-county service area. At the same time, Georgia Power estimated about 748,000 of its customers lost power across the state as of 6 p.m.

Traffic lights also began to fail on Monday. The Duluth Police Department tweeted that the traffic lights were completely out at the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway and old Peachtree Road as of about 2 p.m.

Gwinnett County police recommend that residents treat dead traffic lights as a 4-way stop, even on larger roads.

Both Jackson EMC and Georgia Power were working on solutions throughout Monday afternoon.

"In addition to our own crews who are working, Jackson EMC now has 200 additional crew members from contractors and neighboring utilities," according to the release. "These crews are working side-by-side with our own linemen to remove damaged trees and limbs and make outage repairs as quickly as safety practices and conditions allow."

Georgia Power tweeted at about about 2 p.m. that they'd work to update the public again as soon as conditions were "clear and safe for crews to work in."

Still, Jackson EMC predicted outages would continue throughout the night and into Tuesday morning.

"Due to hazardous working conditions, we expect restoring outages int he areas with the worst damage to take several days," according to the release
