WILSON, N.C. — A flammable roofing material is believed to be the cause of a fire that struck the Bridgestone Firestone Wilson tire plant Wednesday.

No one was injured in the spontaneous fire that ignited on the roof of the company's warehouse.

Roofing contractors had been working on the roof shortly before the fire was discovered. The flames were quickly extinguished by the plant's local emergency response team and, with the help of the local fire departments, cooled all the remaining hot spots to prevent a flare up.

The fire was contained to the roof and never entered the warehouse, according to the company.

"An investigation was immediately initiated and appropriate countermeasures will be taken to prevent a reoccurrence," the company said in a statement.
