Rocky Mount tax preparer charged with fraud

Gloria Ann Johnson, 40, owner of Johnson’s Tax Service on North Winstead Drive, is facing 20 counts of aid or assist in the preparation of fraudulent tax returns, two counts of attempt to evade or defeat tax and three counts of false reports to a law enforcement officer.

The charges were filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue following a lengthy investigation by a special agent. Authorities said Johnson helped created bogus returns for clients from 2009 to 2011. They said she also provided false receipts and documents to her clients to show to the agent in order to hinder the investigation.

Authorities said Johnson also filed fraudulent returns for herself in 2009 and 2010, understating her taxable income and overstating her business expenses.
