Rocky Mount men accused of conning elderly Cary man

Posted July 28, 2013

— Two Rocky Mount men are behind bars in Wake County after Cary police say they attempted to con an elderly, disabled man out of thousands of dollars.

William Kenneth Ferrell, 50, of 931 Gay Road, and Robert Thomas Privette, 28, of 5821 Luther Lane, along with three other men tried to convince a 78-year-old man he needed $55,226 worth of unnecessary roofing and repairs to his Cary home.

The resident, police indicate in arrest warrants, suffers from several health issues, including Parkinson's Disease, and his limited mobility prevented him from being able to substantiate the work was necessary.

Ferrell and Privette were each jailed Friday under $1 million bonds on charges of obtaining property by false pretense, conspiracy to obtain property by false pretense and exploiting a disabled/elderly person's trust.

At least the 78 year old man had enough presence to know something was amiss. $55,226.00 in roof repairs sounds a little expensive doesn't it? Parents, kids, take care of your disabled and elderly family members and manage their checkbook please and always get a second or third opinion on repairs this extensive. What these scammers do is go on your roof to clean the straw from it or to clean the gutters for like $75.00. They then bring you apiece of rotten wood or flashing and tell you that your roof is rotten and they need to replace the roofing and shingles when nothing is really wrong at all. You agree on a price and they write you a proposal and purchase order. They then work for a couple of days actually replacing a few sections of perfectly good roofing. Or they may get a down payment to go get needed supplies and never return. This is how the scam works. Oh yeah, the piece of rotten wood came from their truck. Its a scam aid.

Two men did the same thing to my 91-yr-old Mom; thankfully, she paid them only $1500 before I found out about it. This was about 6 months ago in Garner.
