— Golden East Crossing Mall in Rocky Mount reopened Sunday, one day after shots were fired inside the mall, injuring a 13-year-old boy.

Police found shell casings but have not made any arrests. Mall security called 911 just before 7:20 p.m., and police closed the building and ordered shoppers and workers to leave.

Chad Carpenter, who works at T-Mobile inside the mall, said he saw the shooter and heard gunfire. He and several others hid in the back of the store.

"The next thing we knew, we heard about 10 shots go off, real rapid fire, and I saw a bunch of people running, a bunch of people screaming," Carpenter said. "There was a guy. He was basically running and shooting at the same time. The Victoria's Secret window got blown out. He ran through the Kids Foot Locker and maybe through Belk (and) JCPenney."

Police said a 13-year-old boy went to Nash General Hospital with a graze wound on his leg, but they thought he was an innocent bystander accidentally hit by a bullet. The boy was treated and released.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting. Carpenter said he was still shaken by the incident.

"It's bad. I've grown up in Rocky Mount all my life. I hate to see something like this happen," he said. "It's just bad. People are not going to want to come to the mall."

Anyone with any information is urged to call the Rocky Mount Police Department at 252-972-1411 or the Crime Stoppers hotline at 252-977-1111.

In December 2009, Richeem Robinson, then 18, fired on three people inside the mall, hitting a wall and shattering some glass doors. No one was injured, and Robinsion surrendered to police about a week later.

Robinson was convicted of four counts of misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon and served two months in jail, according to state Department of Correction records.

I also know several people who are willing to take significant losses on their houses just to get out of here as quickly as possible. We certainly can't blame them!

Sorry about the incident with your family. You are so right. Rocky Mount is no longer a place where a person would want to raise a family. This city has really gone down. It's a darn shame that criminals have the power to take over an entire city. I can't even take my family out at night....everything has to be done by evening (5:30-6:00 p.m.). It is just pitiful and the sad thing about is the Rocky Mount City Council doesn't seem to care. None of these issues have been resolved. Can you say PROBLEM!!!!

Exactly! The city can't keep asking us why our families would rather drive to the triangle to shop! I've recently had people accost me at my car in broad daylight! I had my younger sister with me and was so frightened for her; the guy should be lucky he didn't get hurt as I drove away from him before he reached my window! Just a few years ago certain stores would be packed at night and now they're not. It seems most people have the same idea as us!

can the store employee really count 10 shots? From around the corner and down the food court? The RMPD said 5 shell casings were recovered. never fails to get 1 fool on TV.

There are no signs prohibiting Concealed Firearms at Golden East Mall. However, this punk would not follow the rules if they were posted. The sad part is that for him to carry a weapon, it would be a misdemeanor. If it were posted and a CCW holder had been carrying, it is a felony. What is wrong with that picture?

Rocky Mount's crime rate is out of control. It IS the city on demise. And the mayor and other city officials seem to be doing little to get it under control. It is no longer a place anyone wants to move to...they only want to move away!!

Occurrences like this are committed by so called humans. Sad to think that this is what has become to healthy civilized society. TTB

I am really sick and tired of all the whiners and little children out there crying about all the crime and even including legally armed citizens that have decided to take the responsibility for their safety upon themselves. I'm tired of all the little kiddies out there expecting the "nanny state" to take care of them. That's just not realistic! You must be responsible for yourself, your family, and your actions. Remember..."When seconds count...the police are only minutes away" I do not mean that statement as any afront to the fine men and women of law enforcement, but as fine a job as they do, they simply cannot be everywhere at once and let's face it, the criminals have them sorely outnumbered. So quit whinning crying about the crime and all the criminals and stop expecting the government to take care of you...step up and take some of that responsibility yourself!

Rocky Mount is a black hole! Run into the ground by horrible excuses for City Manager, Police Chief, and above all Council men. And in their brilliance today, they have voted YES to the chicken killing plant. Located between me and my water supply! Oh joy Oh Joy! Oh well, I shall be working very diligently on my next home in the country away from this God forsaken city on the demise!

Beachboater: Trouble is...a lot of malls, aparently including this one, are posted no firearms, therefore you cannot legally carry your weapon there to protect yourself and your family. Personally I refuse to shop anywhere that prohibits firearms! You don't want me and my gun, then I guess you don't want my money either... Prohibiting guns anywhere only keeps the legally carried weapons out! Criminals don't care about the law!!
