Reidsville, N.C. — Rockingham County's lead prosecutor, Phil Berger Jr., said Monday that he will formally announce Wednesday his intention to run for North Carolina's 6th Congressional District, which includes parts of Durham, Orange and Person counties.
Congressman Howard Coble, who has held the seat for decades, said last week that he is retiring when his term ends in 2014.
Berger, the Republican district attorney of Rockingham County and son of state Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger, has openly expressed interest in Coble's congressional seat before but pledged never to run against the veteran lawmaker.
He plans to make his announcement Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Bethany Community Middle School in Reidsville.
