Rock 'n' Roll Raleigh Marathon helps fight cancer

The V Foundation for Cancer Research is the event's charity partner. Runners joining Team V wil help earn money for the nonprofit, which was established by N.C. State basketball coach Jim Valvano. The national championship winning coach died of bone cancer in 1993.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Runners planning to hit the streets of downtown Raleigh this April for the Rock 'n' Roll Raleigh Marathon and Half Marathon have a chance to give back to the community.

The V Foundation for Cancer Research is the event's charity partner. Runners joining Team V wil help earn money for the nonprofit, which was established by North Carolina State University basketball coach Jim Valvano. The national championship-winning coach died of bone cancer in 1993.

Valvano's daughter, Jamie, will run in this year's marathon. The race takes on special significance, as she is a 10 year breast cancer survivor.

"We come together and accomplish what we couldn't do alone to cross the finish line and continue funding cancer research," Jamie Valvano said.

Jamie Valvano travels the country and speaks with doctors about cancer research.

As a marathon partner, Team V has raised nearly a half million dollars to fund that research.

The Rock 'n' Roll Raleigh Marathon and Half Marathon is April 10.
