— A Robeson County man was charged Sunday with the beating death of his niece.

Derrick Vanlanot has been named as a suspect in the death of Clara Slayton, 3.

Clara was taken to Southeastern Regional Medical Center on Friday where employees noticed signs of abuse. She died Saturday afternoon. Her cause of death was blunt-force trauma, according to the Robeson County Sheriff's Office.

Clara had been living with Vanlanot, her uncle, since January.

He was being held in the Robeson County jail without bail on Monday evening.

Why she was living with him has nothing to do with him beating her to death. Unless he has a history of abuse how can you hold someone else accountable for what he did? If he did beat her and cause her death he needs to punished.

I have same questions? Did he have legal custody? This thing begs the question of other abuse to this baby....There must be others who need to be held accountable and surly will be over time.
