Robeson escapee back in jail

A man who escaped from the Robeson County Detention Center Sept. 29 was back in custody Monday, the sheriff's office said.

A man who escaped from the Robeson County Detention Center Sept. 29 was back in custody Monday, the sheriff's office said.

Jamal Antonio McRae, 18, claimed to be having chest pains, then assaulted the detention officer who was escorting him to get medical attention and fled, the sheriff's office said.

He was located over the weekend at the Knights Inn in Lumberton and arrested without incident, the sheriff's office said.

McRae was being held on charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon and aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon inflicting serious injury for crimes committed in four counties.

According to state Department of Correction records, he was on probation at the time of his arrest in March.
