CARTHAGE, N.C. — A Robbins man was arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing copper wiring and parts from the heating and air conditioning units outside 13 Moore County churches, authorities said Wednesday.

Johnny Ray Sheffield Jr., 31, of 242 Limestone Road, was charged with 12 counts each of misdemeanor larceny and misdemeanor injury to real property, two counts each of felony breaking and entering, felony larceny and felony possession of stolen goods. He was being held in the Moore County jail under a $70,000 bond.

Deputies received reports this week of property damage from 13 churches in the Robbins, Eagle Springs and West Moore areas of the county, authorities said.

During questioning, Sheffield told investigators of larcenies from churches that hadn't been reported, and he confessed to breaking into old chicken houses around the Robbins area and stealing copper wire from them.
