— A 31-year-old man was stabbed to death by an acquaintance early Wednesday during a social gathering at a Roanoke Rapids home, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Jeremy "Jay" Hecht, of Roanoke Rapids, was slain in a home on Old Halifax Road around 2:45 a.m., said Maj. Bruce Temple. Hecht was pronounced dead at Halifax Regional Hospital.

John Butler, 46, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with murder. He was initially denied bond, but after a court appearance Wednesday morning, he was granted a $100,000 bond.

Investigators said that Hecht and Butler got into an argument, which escalated into a physical altercation. Hecht was stabbed three times, including once in the heart.

It does not appear that Hecht had a weapon at any point during the fight, investigators said.

Investigators said that the home on Old Halifax Road was sometimes used as a hunting club and that alcohol was present at the social gathering. They could not specify if the victim or suspect had been drinking.

I'd have to say you're wrong on that one, sassiek2004. Head over to the east side of Rocky Mount at 2 a.m. with a briefacse in one hand and start walking the streets. You'll be praying for daylight in a matter of minutes.

Point of fact is if it happened at 2:45pm or 2:45am makes no difference. Unless you know the facts or where actually there time makes no difference at ALL!!!

always heard...nothing good ever happens after midnight.

Ever notice 99% of all murders are comitted after midnight.
My parents raised 6 boys, not one was ever out after 11:00 pm
Not a single one has ever spent a night in jail, and not a single one has any court record. My guess is if fools (OOPS IM MEANT FOLKS) would ever realize that if you go to bed instead of to parties you have a lot better chance of living longer.
