ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — A 31-year-old man was stabbed to death by an acquaintance early Wednesday during a social gathering at a Roanoke Rapids home, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Jeremy "Jay" Hecht, of Roanoke Rapids, was slain in a home on Old Halifax Road around 2:45 a.m., said Maj. Bruce Temple. Hecht was pronounced dead at Halifax Regional Hospital.

John Butler, 46, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with murder. He was initially denied bond, but after a court appearance Wednesday morning, he was granted a $100,000 bond.

Investigators said that Hecht and Butler got into an argument, which escalated into a physical altercation. Hecht was stabbed three times, including once in the heart.

It does not appear that Hecht had a weapon at any point during the fight, investigators said.

Investigators said that the home on Old Halifax Road was sometimes used as a hunting club and that alcohol was present at the social gathering. They could not specify if the victim or suspect had been drinking.
