ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Police are searching for an 18-year-old man accused of assaulting and robbing two employees at F & F Rentals in Roanoke Rapids on Thursday afternoon.

Police said Ian Coles, Roanoke Rapids, entered through the back door of the store just after noon and tried to rob two women working there.

Coles, who was armed with a shotgun, sprayed them with pepper spray and attempted to flee with their purses, police spokesman Jeff Hinton said.

Police said Coles struck one of the victims – a 67-year-old woman – in the head with the shotgun and then fled the scene on foot.

Warrants have been issued for Coles’ arrest. He faces two counts each of armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police said he should be considered armed and dangerous.

The 67-year-old woman was taken to the hospital and received multiple stitches on her head. The other victim was transported to the hospital as a precaution because she was also sprayed with pepper spray.
