Goldsboro, N.C. — Authorities in Wayne County are advising residents of a major route that will close Friday afternoon to accommodate the funeral procession for Carey A. Winders, the county’s longtime sheriff who died last week.
Starting at 2:15 p.m., authorities will close U.S. Highway 117 North from Smith Chapel Road in Mount Olive to Genoa Road in Dudley. Drivers will be detoured through Mount Olive to U.S. Alt. 117.
A service to celebrate Winders’ life will begin at 2 p.m. inside Mount Olive College’s Kornegay Arena. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park. The portion of the highway will remain closed until the graveside service has ended.
Overflow and public parking will be at the Wayne Regional Agricultural Fairgrounds. There will be walking access between the fairgrounds and the cemetery.
Winders, who was first elected sheriff in 1994, suffered a heart attack at home while getting ready for work Jan. 24. He was 57.
