In January 2013, WRAL News conducted a poll of 500 North Carolina residents on gun policy and related issues. Before results of the poll were released, we asked the state's 2 Senators and 13 House members to respond to some of the same questions.

Rep. Richard Hudson, a Republican who represents the 8th Congressional district, did not answer the survey questions, but offered a written statement:

“I do not support any new gun laws. The fact of the matter is, we cannot regulate people’s actions, no matter how much we attempt to regulate their freedoms. By implementing restrictions on our Second Amendment rights, we are disarming the average citizen and opening ourselves up to continued acts of violence. We must focus on protecting our citizens and rectifying the root causes of such evil acts rather than enforcing hasty solutions. Not a day passes that I don’t think about the Newtown community and question why the horrific tragedy occurred; however, I believe a more thoughtful and extensive conversation is warranted to prevent this from happening again.”
