Rex Hospital Open returns to Triangle Friday

The Rex Hospital Open runs through Sunday at TPC Wakefield Plantation in north Raleigh. The annual charity tournament offers a chance for more than 150 golfers to earn a coveted PGA Tour card and lots of fun for families, who want to take in a bit of golf. Kids 16 and under are free.

Over the past 30 years, the event has raised more than $9 million for programs at UNC Rex Healthcare. This year, money raised will support cardiovascular disease prevention and education at the new North Carolina Heart & Vascular Hospital, which recently opened on UNC REX’s main Raleigh campus.

Events began Tuesday with the first round of competition scheduled for Thursday and the second round on Friday. Saturday is Family Day. You'll find face painting, music, free ice cones, rock climbing and food trucks. Live music is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the fan expo stage. The final round is Sunday.

In addition to kids 16 and under, free admission also is offered Thursday through Sunday to active duty, military reserve, National Guard, military retirees and veterans, as well as to Wake County Public School System employees, who have valid IDs. For others, daily grounds tickets are $10.
