Posted August 12, 2013

— Retired Raleigh bishop F. Joseph Gossman died Monday after a long illness, according to the Catholic Diocese of Raleigh.

Gossman, 83, served as Bishop of Raleigh for 31 years before retiring in 2006.

"I ask the faithful in the Diocese to join me in praying for the eternal happiness of Bishop Gossman and to thank God for the gifts of his priestly example and faithful ministry," current Bishop of Raleigh Michael F. Burbidge said in a statement Monday.

Burbidge will celebrate Mass for Gossman at 12:10 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Cathedral in downtown Raleigh. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Bishop Gossman was the last "moral shepherd" of the Raleigh Diocese, an unabashed liberal and one of our state's most outspoken advocates for social justice for the working class. I remember when the cucumber pickers for Mt. Olive Pickles were struggling to unionize for fair wages and decent working and living conditions. You couldn't find a more outspoken leader than Bishop Gossman. He was with them in the streets, in the fields, in the board rooms, and THEY WON in large part to his influence! He fought the Republicans on moral grounds, on religious grounds, on intellectual grounds, every single time they tried to hurt the poor, women, teachers, the environment. He stood outside Central Prison at midnight every time our state intended to execute a prisoner. He was a true, faithful Catholic in every sense.

Sadly, the current Bishop Burbidge is not as outspoken for the poor and marginalized.
