Restaurant review: Another Broken Egg

Another Broken Egg is a new brunch cafe in North Hills. They had their soft opening last week, so the Out & About crew had to check it out.

The chain also has locations in Durham and Morrisville.

The location: The restaurant is in North Hills shopping center, on the same side as Chuy's and World of Beer. It is right next to the Hyatt. During lunch time, parking is at a premium, so you might have to park in the deck and walk.

The restaurant: Another Broken Egg is decorated as a cute cafe with large windows in the front letting in natural light. There is a small bar area and a private room that would be good for a small groups and parties.

The food: As the name suggests, Another Broken Egg focuses on dishes with egg as the key ingredient. They serve many brunch favorites, like omelets and eggs Benedict, along with waffles, pancakes, sandwiches and salads. 

The meal: We each tried a different entree and shared the Biscuit Beignet appetizer. They're little pieces of Southern-style biscuits, fried up and covered with powdered sugar. They were delicious plain or dipped in the accompanying honey marmalade. This dish is definitely one to share. Tara said this was her favorite dish from our visit.

Caitlin: I went with the Huevos Rancheros, which came in a skillet heaped with black beans, salsa, cheese and onions. I also got extra breakfast chorizo. These eggs are definitely filling and even came with a side of country potatoes. The hearty flavors were all there, and it wasn't too spicy, if you're wary of heat. My only complaint: the black beans, which were in between two layers of tortillas, were not drained, and the extra liquid made the tortillas very mushy and difficult to eat. I also found myself searching for more chorizo on my plate. It was good, and I wanted more of it!

Kathy: I was surprised the Biscuit Beignets came with a dipping sauce. In Louisiana, our beignets just come covered in powdered sugar. The honey marmalade dipping sauce was a great accompaniment though. The fact that they were more like a biscuit instead of a doughnut was nice, but did make them more heavy. While the dish was good, I would definitely like to check out some of their other apps - especially the giant cinnamon roll!

I had to find out if they know how to make Bananas Foster properly (the New Orleans way!), so I ordered my pancakes served in that style. You can order your French toast, waffles or pancakes covered in this sauce, which is made using Grand Marnier, rum, butter and bananas. This tasted just like home! The rather large pancakes were drizzled in the sauce. The only complaint I had was that I wanted more sauce. The pancakes got a little dry and I ended up asking for some syrup. I ate about half of my meal and I was full - uncomfortably full - the rest of the day!

Tara: Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I was excited to hear that Another Broken Egg was opening in North Hills. Even though we went for lunch I decided to go with one of the specialty brunches: the Classic Biscuit and Gravy. The biscuits and gravy came with two eggs, two sausage patties and country potatoes. The biscuit was light and fluffy and the gravy took it to a whole new level. The biscuits and gravy with the country potatoes alone would have been enough but I was excited that I also got to try the scrambled eggs and sausage. The sausage was thick and had a unique flavor that went well with the gravy. My only complaint is the restaurant closes at 2 p.m.

The service: Our waitress was attentive and friendly. A few times during the meal she and some managers came by to see how everything was.

The bill: The prices at Another Broken Egg are comparable to any other brunch restaurant and are reasonable for North Hills. The Huevos Rancheros ($9.99) and Biscuit and Gravy ($9.99) were very filling and came with country potatoes on the side, which is a good deal. Pancakes, waffles and French toast can all be had for under $8, but you'll pay $2.99 extra for the Bananas Foster treatment Kathy ordered. Most of the other dishes are under $10, with higher-end items like the Lobster & Brie Omelet getting up to $15.

The verdict: For all of us, this was our first trip to Another Broken Egg, and it won't be our last! We'll be back for the yummy brunch choices, reasonable prices and friendly service.

    That's ALL I need to know. Won't be going. Eggs should come in shells NOT cardboard.....

    Been to the one in Morrisville. The food and service was good. They are always busy.

    When I went to their restaurant in Durham, the didn't even break eggs - they made my omelet with eggs from a carton. They should call themselves "Another Open Carton" not Another Broken Egg.

    Do we have to spend more time on here with more reviews of franchisees….Ever heard of a mom/pop restaurant that serves original recipes….Marketing machine in action here.
