Residents pack meeting to discuss change to Wake, Chatham, Harnett county lines
FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. — There was a packed house at a Tuesday night meeting focused on efforts to correct local county lines.

Harnett County leaders want to redefine the border where Harnett, Chatham and Wake counties meet and held a meeting in Fuquay-Varina to discuss the proposed realignment changes with land owners.

Records dating to 1780 and a deed recorded in 1923 mention a rock pile with an iron pipe as the point where the three counties meet. But a land survey conducted in 1961 led Chatham and Wake counties to adopt a boundary that didn't adhere to that original description.

Redefining boundary lines could impact taxes, schools, properties and emergency services as residents find their homes moved from one county to another.

County leaders faced little resistance from residents about the proposed change Tuesday night.

State and local leaders said they hope to come up with a final decision on the change by August.
