EAST DENNIS, Mass. — Researchers plan to study a dead whale found in Cape Cod as they investigate a concerning trend.
Officials say the female North Atlantic right whale was found dead in Cape Cod Bay Thursday. A Coast Guard vessel towed the whale to a harbor before it was lifted and placed on a flatbed for transport.
The North Atlantic right whale is a critically endangered species. There are fewer than 600 left in the world.
Researchers say female whales are dying at a higher rate, which will hurt the species' population.
Experts say few right whale claves were seen during the winter season which adds to their concerns about their population.
Researchers hope a necropsy and internal samples will determine the cause of the whale's death.
