Republicans meet later this month to choose Millis successor

Posted September 6

— Republican activists in two North Carolina counties will meet later this month to choose someone to fill out the term of a state legislator who is resigning.

State Republican Party Chairman Robin Hayes announced Wednesday the Sept. 19 gathering in which Pender and Onslow county Republicans in the 16th House District will vote on a successor to Rep. Chris Millis of Hampstead.

Millis said last Friday he would resign effective Sept. 15.

Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is required by law to appoint the GOP's pick to complete the rest of Millis' two-year term through 2018.

Based on the timeline, Millis' successor should be ready to serve when the General Assembly reconvenes its work session Oct. 4.
