— Two men died and one woman was injured Friday afternoon in a shooting near a Walmart in Wilmington, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office.

The shooting happened at the Murphys gas station at about 4 p.m. in the 5100 block of Carolina Beach Road, an area referred to as Monkey Junction.

According to authorities, Richard Albert Nielsen, 62, approached Russell Allen Mitchell, 38, called him by name then shot him in the head. Authorities said Nielsen then walked to a car parked at a gas pump and shot Jessica Lynn Modolo, 29, twice, once in the stomach and once in the head. Nielsen then committed suicide with a gunshot to his head.

According to authorities, Modolo was pregnant and her unborn child did not survive. Modolo was taken to the New Hanover County Regional Medical Center where she was being treated for life-threatening injuries. Mitchell and Nielsen were both pronounced dead at the scene.

A larceny report was filed on Feb. 5 claiming Nielsen stole more than $4,000 worth of lawn equipment. According to authorities, Nielsen told his family he would not go to jail over the claims.

The investigation is ongoing.

No additional information was immediately released.

This was a very tragic story, Mr Nielson was apparently infuriated that Russell, his life partner of 19 years left him for Ms Modolo. A gay love triangle with deadly consequences. Hopefully there are some lessons learned from this sad story.

Giving a location that many can recognize in order to get a visual of the location of the crime is typical in journalism. Most people can relate to a story if there is a known landmark.

Liberals hate guns and they hate WalMart. There is not other reason to mention WalMart besides that.

Don't confuse the gun haters with logic or facts, its a waste of your time as they won't believe it anyway.

If guns kill people, then forks make people fat, pencils misspell words and cars make people drive drunk.

I really don't get this logic. If someone is crazy enough to go kill someone... they will use whatever necessary to do so. You cannot blame an object on the actions of it's user. This guy could of used his car to kill the 2.

Nobody says "i'd go commit murder if I could just get a gun..." If they can't, they improvise.

The gas station is where this happened. It's called Murphy Express, not Wal Mart. No Murphy Express was mentioned.

Happened about a mile from my house. The gas station is in a corner of the Wal-Mart parking lot, so that's why the store was mentioned. There were 3 people involved. Apparently a man shot another man who died and a woman who was still alive at last report, then shot himself. I haven't heard any other details except they think it was a targeted incident.

Of course, blame the inanimate object. Some people just can't fathom that PEOPLE commit crimes. I'm sure reasonable restrictions or bans would solve all the world's problems.
