meh2....I just retired from Durham PD and sure there were a few bad apples. I take exception to you calling those men and women corrupt. I would be glad to take a day or a wekend and take you around and show you DPD is the cream of the crop and a great bunch of good moral folks. You can email me at gdelliott43@gmail.com and again I could change your mind in a day! God Bless.

I don't care if you say this isn't about race, I drive through the worst parts of Durham, and I see no less than four buildings painted in the color of the Mexican flag, and more and more businesses with signs in Spanish. That is a sure sign of a rising crime rate. Then I see large numbers of black males that could work at Wendy's if they didn't think they were too good for it, all walking down the road at 10AM on Monday with nothing to do. I would say I saw Asians or Indians or white people on the road, but the truth is I rarely do. They all stay in their cars or never come out of the house it seems! A good first step here would be to find a real black leader to inspire people to work instead of complaining about getting the shaft, then deport all the illegal aliens. Crime rates would plummet.

..."And, it's interesting to see the jail sentences handed down on a guy stealing so he can feed his family versus a guy destroying thousands of people's lives so he can buy a bigger yacht or another home in the French Riviera. hereandnow99..."

Yes...it certainly will be interesting to see how much time Charley Rangel receives for stealing $$millions and not reporting multiples of thousands of dollars of income to the IRS....!!!!! vs some poor sole for stealing a six pack in Durham!!!!

Wasn't there a report a week or two ago that said crime was down in Durham???

    Getting confused.

    God bless.

Violent crime follows poverty. On average, Durham has lower incomes than Cary, Chapel Hill, etc...so, the violent crime rate is higher. It has nothing to with race, schools or liberals...but income.

Conversely, poor people don't commit much white collar crimes, like those stealing $Billions$ from retirement funds.

And, it's interesting to see the jail sentences handed down on a guy stealing so he can feed his family versus a guy destroying thousands of people's lives so he can buy a bigger yacht or another home in the French Riviera.

First, to those of you who are unaware Durham is not comprised of criminals. Does crime happen here? Certainly but Durham is not alone. Last week in Raleigh someone was shot in a barbershop downtown at 9AM; the week prior a storekeeper was stabbed during a robbery attempt in Downtown Raleigh at 10AM. So, crime is everywhere. As for someone's comment about the "liberal justice system", it's not liberal or conservative. It's the Constitution and we all - accused or not - have rights under it. As for police inaction, the only time I've dealt with an officer was to get directions and following the break-in of my mother's car. Both times, the officers were courteous and did what they could. I'm guessing if you looked, crime is probably up all over.

This is news???? It doesn't take a blurb on WRAL to state the obvious. Just look at your stories for the day. Your site should be called the Durham News via WRAL. People need to get a grip in that town and stand up for immediate and swift justice. Start talking and work with the cops instead of against them. Or arm yourself becasue there won't be a single jury to convict you regardless of law.

untiltheyallhaveahome - Isn't that just typical for today. I had a brand new laptop stolen out of a hotel room in SC. The police there did basically nothing. I bet if I get caught with my revenge they will though. Victims of crimes no longer have rights and it is sick. Theives and violent criminals are the scum of the earth but nothing is ever done. In your case the problem is durham does not consider stealing a crime. There are too many shootings/gang wars/rapists to deal with what we both think is a real crime as well.

I work in Durham and had my purse stolen out of my car while I was in a convenience store (yes, it was locked). I called the police and they did NOTHING! There was only one other person "hanging around" when I went into the store, he came out as I went in. This store has video surveillance and I asked them if they would look at it. They told me there was no need as the perp was long gone. Well, I siad LOOK AT THE TAPE AND YOU WILL SEE WHO DID IT! They rolled their eyes at me like I was some king of ditsy woman! NO! I DNO NOT Support the DPD. I have family members who are cops and would NEVER do that!
